Immigration and Border Missioner, San Diego Episcopal Diocese & Executive Director of the Unified US Deported Veterans Resource Center
Robert Vivar is a passionate advocate for immigration and border issues, serving as the Immigration and Border Missioner for the San Diego Episcopal Diocese. He is also the Bi-National Coordinator for Via International, where he coordinates student and faith-based groups for border and immigration immersion trips. In addition, Robert is the Executive Director of the Unified US Deported Veterans Resource Center, a vital part of the IMMVETS coalition, which has helped numerous deported veterans secure their VA benefits and work toward repatriation to the U.S. — the only home they’ve known.
Robert’s commitment to human rights extends to his work with the Chaparral Humanitarian Alliance, where he helped refugees and asylum seekers gain access to lawful entry during the COVID-19 pandemic by facilitating their presentation at U.S. Ports of Entry, with confirmation from authorities.
Robert’s personal journey has also shaped his advocacy. After being unlawfully deported, he fought back through the legal system, with the support of Munger Tolles and Olsen, who successfully argued before the California Supreme Court to vacate his conviction. This led to the reopening of his removal proceedings, which were ultimately vacated by the Board of Immigration Appeals. On November 11, 2021, Robert regained his legal permanent resident status, returning to the United States to honor the military service of his son, grandson, and brothers, marking a powerful and personal homecoming.
