ImmDef Applauds Re-Introduction of the American Dream and Promise Act

Los Angeles, CA -- The Immigrant Defenders Law Center (ImmDef) applauds today’s re-introduction of the American Dream and Promise Act in the House of Representatives led by Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (D-TX-29). ImmDef, the largest deportation defense nonprofit organization in Southern California, endorsed the legislation. The American Dream and Promise Act provides a pathway to permanent residency and ultimately U.S. citizenship for people who have been in legal limbo for years such as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients.

Margaret Cargioli, Directing Attorney, Policy and Advocacy, said, “Humane and economically sound bipartisan immigration legislation is exactly what’s needed to help counter the current assault by an administration that aims to traumatize immigrant communities and tear families apart. The bipartisan American Dream and Promise Act would allow hundreds of thousands of Dreamers, TPS, and DED status holders the ability to live in the United States without fear during these dark days of mass deportations and mass detention. ImmDef supports this practical solution, which embraces the contributions of immigrants in the United States and will help keep families together. ImmDef thanks Congresswoman Garcia and the other members of Congress—including members of the California delegation, Rep. Chu, Rep. Correa, and Rep. Lofgren—who are championing positive policies that treat immigrants with dignity."
